Cedar Deck Oiling Auckland

Decks take more punishment than any other timber on the property. We wash them back and oil them properly so they stay walkable, warm underfoot and protected.

Why decks fail faster than cladding

A deck is horizontal, so it holds water instead of shedding it, and it takes direct overhead sun for most of the day. Add foot traffic, furniture, planters and salt air and the coating on a deck is working several times harder than the coating on a wall. That is why a deck oiled at the same time as the house will almost always want attention first.

Cedar deck oiling Auckland homeowners rely on comes down to two things: getting the old, broken-down coating and grey surface fibres off completely, and using a penetrating oil that soaks into the boards rather than forming a film that will peel and flake underfoot.

Timbers we oil

Cedar decking is the specialty, but the same process applies across the outdoor timbers most Auckland homes are built with.

Cedar decking

Light, stable and beautiful, but soft. Cedar needs an oil that penetrates without lifting the grain or leaving a surface film to wear through.

Kwila and hardwoods

Dense, oily and prone to tannin bleed and heavy greying. Preparation matters more here than anywhere, and we oil accordingly.

Pergolas and louvres

Overhead structures with awkward access and exposed end grain. Coated in place, with the fixings and surrounds protected.

Screens and feature timber

Slat screens, privacy panels and posts, finished to match the deck so the whole outdoor area reads as one.

Our cedar deck oiling Auckland process

Deck work is preparation-heavy. Most of the time on site goes into getting the surface right, because oil applied over grey, degraded fibres will simply lift away with them.

  • Assessment of the boards, fixings and any movement or cupping
  • Soft wash with a surfactant to remove dirt, mould and old coating
  • Removal of greyed surface fibre so the oil reaches sound timber
  • Full drying time before any product goes down
  • Penetrating oil applied to saturation, including end grain and edges
  • Surrounds, glass and adjacent surfaces protected throughout

Oils we use on decking

Film-forming products belong on walls, not underfoot. Everything we put on a deck penetrates.

Dryden Wood Oil

A penetrating oil available clear or with a colourtone, feeding the timber and leaving the grain visible rather than coated over.

Wood-X

Deep penetration with good UV resistance, well suited to decks that take sun for most of the day.

CUTEK CD50

Moves moisture out of the board and reduces cupping and movement — particularly useful on hardwood decking. We are a preferred CUTEK applicator.

We coat and protect existing decking. We do not replace boards, joists or fixings — if the substructure or any boards need work, have a builder complete that first and we will oil the finished deck.

Doors, cladding and the rest of the exterior

Decks are rarely the only timber that needs attention. If the cladding, garage door or front door are on the same cycle, we coordinate the work so the whole exterior comes back as one and you only have one team on site.
